PROVIDENCE — ecoRI News and the Environment Council of Rhode Island (ECRI) held a forum on climate change Aug. 24 at Brown Univeristy. The organizations invited the candidates for Rhode Island governor to participate. The four Democrats — Todd Giroux, Clay Pell, General Treasurer Gina Raimondo and Providence Mayor Angel Taveras — accepted the invitation. Republicans Ken Block (his campaign said he had a prior engagement) and Cranston Mayor Allan Fung (his campaign failed to respond to numerous e-mails and phone calls) did not participate.
At the forum, which was moderated by ecoRI News editor Frank Carini, the candidates were asked to answer two questions: What role does the governor's office play in responding to the threats and opportunities posed by climate change? What priority would you give to responding to these threats and opportunities?
