Frosty Drew Observatory Eclipse Watching

  • Frosty Drew Observatory & Sky Theater 61 Park Lane Charlestown, RI, 02813 United States (map)

About: Where are you planning to be for the “Great American Eclipse”? If you’re not traveling to be in the path of totality, you still can see a spectacular partial eclipse in Rhode Island, where the moon’s shadow will cover 66 percent of the sun. Special activities at the Frosty Drew Observatory begin at 10 a.m. Several solar telescopes will be available for viewing. A white-light scope shows the event in its natural colors, as it happens. A hydrogen-alpha scope filters the light to enhance sunspots and solar prominences. Solar projectors with big screens will make for easy viewing of all the events in real time. The solar eclipse starts at 1:30 p.m. and will continue until 4, with the maximum 66 percent eclipse occurring at 2:47. The observatory will have a limited supply of eclipse safety glasses available for visitors to use. Glasses will also be available for purchase. If you bring your own, be sure they are properly certified. A $1 donation to the observatory is suggested for this event.
