JOHNSTON, R.I. — Rhode Island residents and businesses can now bring foam products, including polystyrene, or Styrofoam, to the Central Landfill’s small-vehicle disposal area to be recycled.
Through a partnership with DART Container Corp., the Rhode Island Resource Recovery Corporation is now accepting two types of foam products to be recycled: food-service foam and rigid-packaging foam.
This material can be dropped off for free during the facility’s normal business hours, but must be segregated, clean, dry and bagged in clear or translucent bags. Foodservice foam, such as coffee cups and food trays, must be bagged separately from all other foam.
The facility doesn’t accept for recycling foam products such as packing peanuts and spongy foam — think fan foam fingers. Some UPS or FedEx stores may accept packing peanuts, or check with local gift shops to see if they would like this material.
